Funeral Services were held recently for Richard D. Klutts, long-time leader of the Eastside Optimist Club of Monterey Park. Klutts grew up in East Los Angeles, attended Kern Jr. High, Garfield High School, ELAC and graduated from Cal State L.A.
With outdoor temperatures expected to go well over the 100 degree mark, safety officials are warning residents to stay cool and watch for signs of high temperature problems.
The Monterey Park Fire Department remind ed citizens to take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside during this heat wave. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
In high school football action on Aug, 26, 2017, local teams Cantwell Sacred Heart and Schurr were the only teams to open the season with wins. Cantwell Sacred Heart defeated Glendale 40-6, and Schurr won 21-14 against California.
California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIFSS) has released its first high schools sports polls of the season on Aug. 21, 2017.
Locals include Schurr ranked number 8 in Division 12 in football, and six area teams are ranked in girls volleyball.
Mark Keppel High Aztec football team is off to the start of an other rough season. The team is short handed and many players will have to play both defense and offense. They are also short of experience, as most players are sophmores.
While the Aztec gridders have only one one game is the past three years, they grind it out every year starting out with spring practice and summer work outs. What they lack in size, experience and football knowhow, they make up in enthusiasm,
