ROSEMEAD - Southern California Edison and Edison International recently awarded four west San Gabriel Valley college students with $2,500 scholarships to be used at their respective universities, company officials said.

The scholarships are renewable for up to four years for a total of $10,000, officials said, and are for students studying science, technology, engineering or math.

"These scholarships provide the opportunity for students to further their education and realize their full potential as well as help them pay for rising college costs," said Barbara Parsky, senior vice president of corporate communications for Edison, in a press release.

The four local students who received scholarships were Montebello resident Sally Law who graduated from Schurr High School and is going to major in math at UCLA, Alhambra resident Nancy Fann who graduated from Mark Keppel High School and is going to major in chemical engineering at USC, Alhambra resident William Seto who graduated from Alhambra High School and is going to major in electrical engineering at UCLA and San Gabriel resident Edwin Chen who graduated from Gabrielino High School and is going to major in engineering at UCLA.

The scholarship program is for students who live in Edison's service area, have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, are attending college near Edison's service area and are going to be full-time students majoring in math, physics, chemistry, engineering, materials science or computer science/information systems, in addition to being legal U.S. residents and demonstrating financial need.

Last year, Edison awarded nearly $178,000 in scholarship money to 71 students.
