Thin shreds of chicken, juicy pork slices, jumbo scrimp and an assortment of seasonal seafood all mixed in a Vietnamese fried rice is a must at My Dung restaurant on Garvey near Del Mar. Late last Saturday after a long day, I popped in this inviting little eatery and ordered the refreshing young coconut water to go with what I now call the Vietnamese jambalaya fried rice with a side of tender slivered steak.

For one, each meat in the dish was clearly identifiable and tasty. Secondly, I was thankful for the easy-on-the-soy sauce and more on the fresh herbs and green onions that gave the rice a tantalizing bite.

Don't mistake My Dung for a fast-food place, even though the service more than speedy. The dining room was just about to capacity, yet within a few minutes of placing my order, the drink arrived, and shortly after a steaming mound of rice and beef was delivered hot.

Frankly, the staff could be more friendly and engaging, but I guess that is better than a chatty server who makes mistakes on your order. So, I entertained myself with the large fish tank near the entrances. A few exotic aquatic creatures schooled around, admiring themselves in the glass.

And coming from me who speaks not a word in Vietnamese, I did not feel isolated one bit, most of the neighboring guests were chit chatting in English too, Asian or not. On a whole, I would say My Dung is not too shabby for a quick bite and flavorful Vietnamese meal.
