Paul’s Kitchen, a well-known and loved local restaurant in the West San Gabriel Valley, has closed its doors after 33 years of business. The Cantonese Style restaurant was one of the first Chinese restaurants in Monterey Park where it was located at 1950 So. Atlantic Blvd. The restaurant was owned by the Yee Family. Tom Yee, who managed the restaurant, was a familiar face who welcomed customers to the location. Paul’s Kitchen was originally located in in central Los Angeles and was a favorite for business people during the day, and families in the evening. In their letter to customers, the Yee family stated the following: “It is with deep sorrow that after 30 years of business, we are announcing the closure of Paul’s Kitchen effective Monday, September 29, 2008. “Ever since we opened our doors in February 1977 as one of the first Chinese restaurants in Monterey Park, we have enjoyed serving you, and your family and friends.” The restaurant featured California “Cantonese Cusine,” which is considered “old fashoned” by some. But it was a favorite among many customers. On the last two days of operation, the restaurant was busy as word got out of the pending closure. Many people were there to have their favorites, such as egg foo young, sweet & sour pork, egg flower soup, chow mein, eggrolls, fried shrimps, and many B-B-Q Pork dishes. The restaurant offered a full bar and a small entertainment area where many local artists got their start. The Lee family is still operating the original Paul’s Kitchen located at 1012 So. San Pedro Street, in downtown Los Angeles.
