LOS ALAMITOS - 5/23/11 - The curtain has come down abruptly on the Alhambra High softball team's playoff run.
The CIF Southern Section - high school sports' governing body - has "removed" the Moors from further competition after it was determined the team violated a rule in regards to batting practice, according to a statement released Monday by CIF.
The violation happened prior to the team's first-round game against host Duarte High, which the Moors won.
The rules covering batting practice is actually rather lengthy, but does say this: "Teams entered in softball playoffs WILL NOT be permitted to take batting practice on the day of the scheduled contest."
Thom Simmons, director of communications for CIF Southern Section, said violation of this rule over the years is actually quite common.
"It seems like it happens every year," Simmons said. "We've dealt with this issue approximately 10 times in 15 years. That's baseball as well as softball, but it does happen."
CIF's statement was released late Monday afternoon and no one at Alhambra High was available to comment on the removal from the playoffs.
Duarte will now face South El Monte High in the second round of the CIF-SS postseason.
