AHMC Reports Patient Information Lost in Laptop Thefts

Thousands of files containing health data for 729,000 patients were lost when two laptops were stolen at a local medical institution in the San Gabriel Valley.

AHMC medical group, which runs most of the local hospitals, said in the L.A. Times that thieves had stolen two the laptops on Oct. 12 from its medical campus. The location was reportedly gated and protected by security.

The theft was reported on Oct 14. The AHMC medical group operates the following hostpitals: Garfield Medical Center in Monterey Park, Monterey Park Hospital, Greater El Monte Community Hospital in South El Monte, Whittier Hospital Medical Center, San Gabriel Valley Medical Center in San Gabriel and Anaheim Regional Mecial center.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the comjputers contained data including patient's names, Medeicare/insurance identification numbers, diagnosis/procedures codes and insurance/patient payment records.

Hospital officials said affected paients may want to place fraud alerts on their credit files and order credit reports to look for fraudulent activity.
