Preparations are underway in the Asian community for celebrations to user in the Year of the Rat and celebrate the annual Lunar New Year events.
Public celebrations are typically held throughout the Western San Gabriel Valley by family associations, community groups and local business groups.
NEW YEARS GALA
Kicking off the local events will be a fundraising gala that includes dinner, entertainment and dancing at the Capital Seafood Restaurant at 755 W. Garvey Ave., Monterey Park. The event is sponsored by the City’s Business Improvement District and the Economic Development Department.
The minimum $50 per person event begins with wine tasting at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and dancing at 7:30 p.m. For individual tickets and tables, contact City of Monterey Park Economic Development Department at (626) 307-1385.
A two day Floral Festival welcoming the beginning of the Lunar year is scheduled Saturday and Sunday, January 9 and 10 along Garvey Boulevard between Garfield and Alhambra avenues. The celebration will include arts an crafts booths, games, and carnival rides.
CHINESE NEW YEAR PARADE
The 17th Annual Lunar New Year Parade will be held Saturday, Feb. 16 under the sponsorship of the cities of Alhambra and San Gabriel. Serving as grand marshal will be Yewki Tomita, a candidate for the U.S. Olympic gymnastic team. The parade will travel along Valley Boulevard, from New Avenue to Garfield. The parade will end in a street festival along Valley Boulevard.
