The Trustees of the Los Angeles Community College District have announced the selection of Dr. Francisco Rodriguez as the next chancellor of the district that includes East Los Angeles College and eight other community colleges.
Dr. Rodriguez is currently superintendent/president of the Mira Costa Community College District. The decision was made at a closed session meeting Wednesday night.
In a email, Carol Justiniano, executive secretary to the board announced the Board’s unanimous vote to appoint Dr. Rodriguez as our chancellor.
The Board will vote to take final action on Dr. Rodriguez’ appointment at its meeting on Wednesday, March 26, 2014.
Mike Eng, a member of the Community College Board said “Dr. Rodriquez who has served in higher education for over 30 years was the best possible candidate and I look forward to working with him to make sure that access to college and student success is achieved.”
As a board member, Eng was involved in the selection of the new chancellor.
In the Email, Justiniano said the selection was made after a thorough and comprehensive national search.
“We are confident that we have picked the person best qualified to lead our district.”
Dr. Rodriguez has been at his current position at Mira Costa Community College District for the last five years an in higher education for nearly 30 years. He has both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from UC Davis and a Ph.D. in education from Oregon State University.
Justiniano stated that the Mira Costa Community College District was struggling with both accreditation and financial problems when Dr. Rodriguez arrived. He is credited with that district’s impressive turnaround in both areas.
The search has concluded a 10-month recruitment and selection process conducted by the Association for Community College Trustees. Dr. Rodriguez will assume his new position at LACCD on June 1st at which time I hope you will join me in welcoming him to the LACCD.
