Six middle school girls from Monterey Park and Montebello will attend the week-long Tech Trek Science and Math Camp at UC Santa Barbara this August.
The Montebello/ Monterey Park Satellite Branch of the Alhambra/San Gabriel AAUW (American Association of University Women) provides a scholarship of $850 to go towards the $900 fee for each girl’s camp expense.
This year’s camp scholarship winners were Caitlyn Yang (Ynez School), Natalia Ibarra (Macy school), Lelani Young (Repetto School), Ann Ngo (Brightwood School), Mystique Rocha (La Merced School) and Tatiana Arias (Eastmont School).
Young women who are seen to benefit most from the experience are chosen with the goals of stimulating interest in math and the sciences and encouraging college attendance, according to Tilda De Wolfe, AAUW spokesperson.
In the fall there will be a luncheon thanking donors and learning of the girl’s camp experiences from each girl.
The AAUW members work through the year to gather contributions from local groups, members and friends to raise funds for the camp scholarships. They also staff the Pasadena Showcase House to further raise funds.
The Eastside Optimist Club, the Monterey Park Women’s Club and Monterey Park Mayor Anthony Wong are among the highest contributors this year, the 16th year of this program.
Recipient selections are made based on written essays and interviews.
