Plans for the Special Olympics World Games in Southern California in 2015 with Monterey Park and Alhambra serving as host cities, were unveiled at a press conference held at Cal State L.A. on Friday, November 7, 2014. (To see press conference click ON THIS LINK.)
The World Games scheduled to begin on July 25 2015 with more than 7,000 athletes from 177 countries arriving in Southern California and staying for several days. 100 communities ranging from San Diego to San Luis Obispo will host the athletes.
Cal State L.A. will be providing 200 rooms to house many of the special athletes as they stay here to compete in events.
During their stay, host committees, such as one led by Monterey Park’s Kana Lee, will have special events to welcome the visitors to San Gabriel Valley.
Attending Friday’s press conference were Monterey Park Mayor Hans Liang and City Clerk Vincent Chang. Mayor Gary Yamauchi represented the city of Alhambra. Also participating were Elena Stern, communications vice president for Cal State L.A.; Marco Martinez, 2015 World Games Global Messenger; and Joan Klonowski, vice president of Host Town L.A. 2015.
Also participating were Monterey Park committee members Monterey Park City Manager Paul Talbot, Police Chief Jim Smith and Fire Chief Scott Haberle and Dora Leung of Monterey Park Chamber.
