Alhambra swore in its three re-elected council members at the meeting of December 8. City Clerk Lauren Miles administered the oath to council members Luis Ayala, Steven Sham and Barbara Messina. Each spoke briefly after taking the oath.
Messina announced it would be her last term in public office. She has served on the city council for 19 years and eight years on the Alhambra Unified School District. (Click here http://youtu.be/LkfwTI40jbA to see her comments as broadcast on the City website.)
As the only council member who faced opposition in the November election, Sham expressed thanks to his family and his supporters, as well as the residents who voted for him. He said he would be a representative for “everyone, not just those that voted for me.”
Sham was strongly opposed by Eric Sunada who, despite limited grass roots campaign funds came close to defeating Sham.
Attending the meeting were Council members Peter Chan and Teresa Real Sebastian from Monterey Park and Rosemead Councilwoman Maggie Clark. Representatives from other elected officials were also in attendance to present certificates.
Alhambra Council member Steven Placido was absent from the meeting.
