The 626 Golden Streets event schedule for Sunday, June 26, in northern San Gabriel Valley has been canceled due to brush fires in the San Gabriel mountains. Smoke, ashes from the San Gabriel Complex fires and emergency vehicle access would have made the open streets events impossible to conduct according to news reports.
No future date was announced. Major streets along cities of Irwindale, Azusa and Duarte would not have been available for the event which featured open streets to allow bicycling, walking and other non-motorized form of transportation.
Law enforcement in the impacted cities said the closure of many streets would have blocked the way of fire trucks and other emergency vehicles. The open streets event covered about 18.5 miles of streets from South Pasadena through Pasadena, San Marino, Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, and Azusa. The route did not cover Alhambra, San Gabriel, Rosemead and Monterey Park. Press reports said the sponsoring groups were considering rescheduling the event for next fall.
