A Memorial Rosary and viewing will be held for former Monterey Park Mayor G. Monty Manibog on Thursday, August 18, from 7:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Miraculous Medal Church at 820 N Garfield Ave, Montebello, CA 90640. He was also a columnist for the Journal newspapers, writing the "Point of Law" column.
Manibog, 86, passed away Friday, August 12, while hospitalized for a serious lung illness. He is survived by his wife, Jean, and adult children:Monty Manibog, Jr. Lisa Manibog Brennan Lew, Lana Manibog, Dean Manibog, and Darren Manibog; eighteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by a son, Rickey Manibog; There are also three sisters. Priscilla Caracol, Adele Karnopp and Francine Christian.
Funeral services will be held at Miraculous Medal Church Friday at 1:30 p.m., followed by the burial at Resurrection Cemetery in Montebello.
Born in the Philippines, Manibog was raised in Hawaii, later moving to Monterey Park. He graduated from Loyola University Law School. He developed a successful law practice and was elected three times to the Monterey Park City Council, serving as mayor, three times.
For more than a decade he was a regular columnist for the Monterey Park and West Valley Journal. His column, "Point of Law," in which he offered his commentary on the legal aspects of society, was faithfully followed by thousands of readers in the San Gabriel Valley. Until recently, he maintained law offices in the area.
