Elections Today in Monterey Park, San Gabriel

Today, Tuesday, March 7 will be Election Day for voters in Monterey Park and San Gabriel. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. In both cities, Incumbents are being challenged by numerous candidates who qualified for the ballot. The election will be run by the County Registrar-Recorder's office.

In Monterey Park, incumbent council members Hans Liang and Peter Chan, who are completing their first term, are opposed by Joe Ray Avila, Anthony Felix, Jr,, Randal Avila, and Margaret Leung.  Also on the Monterey Park Ballot and unopposed are City Clerk Vincent Chang and City Treasurer Joseph Leung.

Library Measure LL, a continuation of an existing parcel tax, is also on the ballot. The measure calls for a $25 annual tax per residential property tax, the same as Measure C, passed nearly 20 years ago, which is ending next year. The measure needs a two-thirds majority vote to pass. Measure LL will extend hours at the Library, provide funds for technology improvements and library materials.

A low vote turnout of under 15 percent is being predicted. Because of this prediction, there are only nine polling places in Monterey Park. Some voters will have to go half way across the city to find their polling place. Unlike previous elections, ballots will be counted in Norwalk where the Registrar Recorder's office is located. Monterey Park City Hall will be dark and there will be no broadcast of the election process on MPk-TV, the city television stationn.

To replace the ballot counting show, the Greater Monterey Park Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a "Community Election Watch" which will start after the polls are closed at aobut 8 p.m. The chamber will monitor the Registrar Recorder's posting of election results in Monterey Park and other locations. The Election Watch will be held at the El Encanto building, 700 El Mercado Avenue.

In neighboring San Gabriel, incumbents Jason Pu and Chin Ho Liao are opposed on the ballot by A.J. Fauer, Mario De La Torres, Denise Menchaca,  Scott Bowles and Eric Chan.
