Young Techies Can Learn Gaming Codes at Library

  • By David Barron

Fall session begins September 14 at the Monterey Park Library starting out with a great opportunity for young computer techies.
Children between the ages of 9-14 and interested in creating video games are being invited to join the CS First Coding Club at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library this fall.

Librarians emphasize that no experience is necessary.  Participants design and program their own video games using scratch code. They can learn important gaming and computer science (CS) concepts while building racing games, mazes, and other fun.
From September 14 to November 2, the club will meet on Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for ages 11-14 and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for ages 9-10 in the library’s computer lab.
The library is offering the CS First Coding Club with the goal of teaching youth skills that reflect their love for computers and online gaming, and to encourage them to pursue careers in computer programming. Computer science-related skills such as animation, engineering, and problem-solving are all skills deemed necessary for 21st career success.
The CS First Coding Club is part of the library’s Southern California Edison “Building 21st Century Skills for Tweens and Teens’” grant. The Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library provides access to technology tools with the goal of promoting education and success for everyone in our community.
For more information about the free program, contact the library at 626-307-1368 and/or follow on Twitter @MontereyParkLib.
