Garvey District 7th & 8th Graders Get Laptop Computers

ROSEMEAD -- The Garvey School District'sE3 Project is underway at Garvey and Temple intermediate schools and laptops computers have been distributed to all 7th and 8th grade students. The program is called E3 because the purpose is to Empower 21st Century Learners, Expand Learning Opportunities, and Engage Students.

The laptop computers have been distributed over the last two weeks to the students at Garvey and Temple Intermediate Schools

Prior to this distribution, parent attended meetings from September 5th - 17th  to understand what the students were learning about cyber safety and expectations for the care and appropriate use of the laptops.

The rollout to students began on September 24th with the 8th graders at Temple and to 8th graders at Garvey on October 1.  Seventh graders got their computers at Temple on October 8. Garvey 7th graders will receive their laptops on October 22.

Dr. Mary Suzuki, Assistant Superintendent and Mr. David Jung, Coordinator, ETO have spearheaded the effort.  Dr. Sandra Johnson, Superintendent, said, “I am very proud of their outstanding efforts that will help our students so much.  Few individuals could have completed so much work to make this happen in such a short time.”

The Acer Aspire laptops have a 3G connection 24/7.  The computers contain a 6 cell battery to allow them to stay charged throughout the school day.  To date, all the students’ textbooks have been installed in the computer memories.   Students will also be able to access the Garvey District web site contains information on educational programs and further information to help students.

The students have access to many on-line educational resources such as Study Island, Catch-Up Math, Hot Math, Khan Academy, and the writing program, My Access.  Students also were given email accounts within the Garvey District system, as well.
