ROSEMEAD – Garvey School District Board member Janet Chin is a target of a recall effort led by the district’s teacher’s union. The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder today said a “Notice of Intention to Circulate a Recall Petition” had been rejected last week for corrections but is expected to be refiled.

A spokesperson for the Registrar-Recorder said the recall notice cannot be served on the office holder until it is correctly filed with the county office.
A controversial contract extension and pay raise for district Superintendent Sandra Johnson was approved by a majority of the board and has resulted in recall threats at the three board members who voted in favor of the extension and raise.
The recall effort is reportedly being organized by the Garvey Education Association, the teacher’s union for the district. The union has been in disagreement with the superintendent since her appointment two years ago.
Chin was elected to the board of education in 2007 and re-elected in 2011. She has three children attending district schools. The recall petition would require signatures of 20 percent of the district’s 19,000 registered voters to be placed on the ballot.
The district covers portions of Rosemead and Monterey Park.
