Garvey School Foundation Gives Awards

Assemblyman Mike Eng had the tables turned on him at the third annual Garvey Education Foundation Gala Awards Dinner on Thursday, May 8. Instead of handing out certificates as he often does, he was on the receiving end of a certificate as one of the honorees for the special event attended by nearly 200 parents, educators and supporters. Others recognized at the event held at the Garvey Community Center were Oliver Chi, Rosemead City Manager for cementing city-school relationships, along with Don Anderson, city director of public safety.


Also honored was Suzanne Coscarelli of the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) for over seeing distribution of free books to pupils at all the Garvey District Schools.

The program included a welcome by School Board President Henry Lo, and greetings from Patricia Martinez, Garvey Intermediate student president; as well as Jamie Chan, Temple Intermediate School student president; and Virginia Peters, district superintendent. Entertainment included a performance by the Garvey School Mustang Singers directed by Michael Drange and a video (“Garvey at Work and Play)” by Peter Navarrete.

The Foundation also announced mini-grants presented to classrooms throughout the district.

The following were the recipients of the Foundation mini-grants

-Teachers Carol Brotsky, Sandra Armenta, Jane Hirata and Kim Potras of Hillcrest, Rice and Sanchez schools for their Science Museum and Max Theater Experience projects.

-Teacher Chuck Hurley of Monterey Vista for a Garden Project.

-Jasmine Alotounian, Garvey School for a Sting Math-Art Project.

-Pat Kasababian, Garvey School for a History Day in Los Angeles.

-Gloria Guzman, Marshall School to purchase laptops for writing.

-Karen Ventura,Claudia Barajas, Audrey Manansala, Shirley Garduno, Brinda Chavez and J.Getman of duff School for costumes for a Reading Is Fundamental event.

-Brinda Chavez and J. Getman of Duff School for a Music Appreciation Project.

- Alice Nishimoto, Rice School, for Science Manipulatives.

-Dr. Christopher Wallace, Sanchez School, for an Art Appreciation Project.
