Monterey Park City Council Thursday approved a monthly "night market" at the Barnes Park Amphitheater starting as early as this june.
The Night Market was proposed by the Monterey Park Chamber and the event organizer called Kollaboration.
The market will have numerous food and vendor booths including a beer and wine garden. Popular Asian entertainment will also be featured.
The city council action involved amending a city ordinance prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages at city parks.. The sponsors plan to sell beer and wine in an fenced in area behind the seats in the amphitheater.
City council must still approve the second reading of the ordinance before final approval. The motion by Council Woman Teresa Real Sebastian also requires a notification of residents within 300 feet of the location. The council vote was unanimous.
The first event could be held in June. The city contract calls for a three year program of night markets. Admission will be charged. The sponsors will cover all city costs, they reported.
Night Markets have proved very popular with the young Asian crowd and have drawn thousands of attendees. However, Steven Kim of Kollaboration believes that the market could draw as many as 5,000 people.
