More than 200 local residents and supporters attended ceremonies where winners of Monterey Park's March 3 municipal election were installed into office with large crowds of supporters on the dais stage to serve as witnesses.
Swearing to "protect and defend the constitution of the United States and California were re-elected council members Teresa Real Sebastian and MItchell Ing. Steven Lam was installed into his first term of office.
Outgoing Councilman Anthony Wong gave his thanks for the opportunity to serve the residents of Monterey Park with eight years on the City Council. He was showered with certificates, plaques and gifts from his many supporters who attended the event.
Installation of the other council persons was a story in itself. Instead of the election winners standing together and jointly reciting the oath of office, each took the stage separately and brought up large crowds of supporters to witness City Clerk Vincent Chang administer the oath of office. Old time city hall watchers were amazed as large groups of people invaded the stage and gathered around as the oath was recited three times.
After Lam was installed each newly council person was given a chance to thank their supporters and pledge to work hard to work together despite their political and philosophic differences.
