MPk Water Users Must Cut Back, District Says

  • By David Barron

Residential water customers in Monterey Park must increase water savings to the 20% level, according to the San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District which serves this city and three others. Currently, home owners have cutback about 15% over usage levels recorded in 2013.

Two board members -- Thomas Wong and John Leung - who represent areas of Monterey Park, presented a report to the Monterey Park City Council at the Wednesday, May 20 meeting. Previously the city council had heard a report from the pubic works department which operates the water department serving the majority of local residents.

Most of the needed water savings must come from home landscape irrigation, officials said, because that's where most of the water is used. The two board members described conservation marketing which are being undertaken by the district which serves Alhambra, Azusa, Sierra Madre as well as Monterey Park. The San Gabriel District is the distributor of water to local cities and buys water from the state water system.

At the same meeting, the city council approved a revised water conservation ordinance that was previously on the books. .
