Two Win Scudder $3,000 Awards

  • By David Barron

The Historical Society of Monterey Park and John Scudder, grandson of Laura Scudder of the potato chip fame, presented the annual Scudder Awards to two students at a dinner held at Marie Calendar’s Restaurant.

Winners of the $3,000 scholarships were Carmella Dean, a business student at Pasadena City College; and James Meza, a Mt. San Antonio College nursing student.
Each year the Scudder Foundation offers awards  to students to help pay their educational expenses in the field of business, food service and nursing in honor of his grandmother Laura Scudder.
The competition is conducted by members of the Historical Society and presented personally by John Scudder in honor of his grand mother.
The awards are presented to deserving students who are following in the footsteps of Laura Scudder.
Despite the odds against female businesswomen, Scudder successfully established a potato chip business in Monterey Park. Later the business expanded into other snack food areas.
