Driver Charged in Crossing Guard’s Death

  • By David Barron

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is charging the driver of a car that struck and killed a crossing guard in Monterey Park.

According to a story published in the Pasadena Star News 19-year-old Jin Yang is being charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license for the January 27, 2015 accident at Garfield Avenue and Elmgate Street.
Yang of Monterey Park is scheduled to appear in Alhambra Superior Court on July 22 to enter a plea to the charges.
According to the District Attorney’s office, Yang was driving a Ford Mustang south on Garfield Avenue at “about 50 mph” in a posted 40 mph zonewhen he lost control of the car and struck and killed Abel Castellanos, a city crossing guard.
A Highway Patrol report stated that Yang slammed on his brakes and veered to the right to avoid another car making a left turn from Northbound Garfield Avenue onto westbound Elmgate Street. The Mustang went out of control and hit Castellanos who was sitting on a folding chair.
Castellanos was a familiar figure to children attending nearby schools.
