The Monterey Park Firefighters Association and the Monterey Park Police Officers Association held a successful "fill the boot" fundraiser to raise funds to the family of Abel Castellano, a city crossing guard who was killed in a tragic accident.
On Jan. 27th, while working as a city crossing guard at the corner of Elmgate and Garfield streets, a car attempting to avoid another vehicle struck Castellano.
Mayor Hans Liang contacted both public safety associations to see what could be done to help the Castellano family during this tragic time.
Monterey Park Firefighters President Matt Hallock and Monterey Park Police Officers President Gabriel Escarsega proposed the idea of a “Fill the Boot” type of fundraiser.
With the approval of Fire Chief Scott Haberle and Police Chief Jim Smith, both groups were able to raise over $4,000 for the Castellano family. On July 29th, at the tree in Elder Park that was recently dedicated to Castellano, both associations, Mayor Hans Liang and son, Ron Castellano, met to present and receive the funds collected with the Fill the Boot event.
