MP Council Members to Sit in on Police Contract Talks

  • By David Barron

Two Monterey Park council members will sit in as "observers" at future negotiating meetings with the Police Officers Association, it was announced at tonight's (3-15-17) council meeting after more than a dozen speakers addressed the city council for nearly two hours during the public communication phase of the meeting. Speakers included local residents and members of the police union.

The Police Officers Association has been  negotiating a new contract with city directors for increased wages and benefits. The police officers are saying they had not received a salary increase in eight years, and previously took a five percent cut to help the city out during the economic depression. A city information sheet issued Monday stated that an offer of a five percent pay increase and increased benefits was recently made, but turned down by the association members.

City negotiators will be joined by Councilmen Mitchell Ing and Hans Liang. Ing said he has many relatives in law enforcement. Liang is a county probation officer. There was no announcement when the next closed door labor negotiations will take place.
