It's a Battle of Mustaches in Monterey Park

  • By David Barron

Monterey Park Council declared the month of November as "Movember" to help raise awareness to prostrate and other male cancers. To support the information effort, city police officers are hoping to have full size mustaches before the end of the month.

Police Chief Jim Smith and Fire Chief Scot Haberle, both sported "beginners mustaches" at the c

ouncil meeting on Nov 14, as they successfully argued to have the city council adopt the resolution. Smith and Haberle are both fair and blond, so their peach fuz was hardly visible on the television broadcast. Many other city staffers, including City Manager Ron Bow, are sporting early stages of mustaches to support the effort.

Male City council members bailed out of the promotion because they are challenged when it comes to hair growth.

Spidr Tech, A city vendor, has promised a $100 donation for every police officer who picks up the Movember mustache challenge. Funds will divided between the West San Gabriel Valley Boys and Girls Club and the Asian Youth Center.
