DSC_0045WebVersSAN GABRIEL – April 6, 2012 – The 77-year-old cross and figure of Jesus Christ on the crucifix that was knocked down and damaged by a December 2011 windstorm was rededicated an unveiled today at the San Gabriel Mission.

Thanks to the efforts of volunteers and donors, a replacement cross and repaired figure of Christ was dedicated in the gardens of the Old San Gabriel Mission.
Father Steve Niskanen, CMF, with the Help of Gabrielino-Tongya tribal members blessed and unveiled the repaired cross before a crowd of about 100 local residents and friends.

Last December 1, branches from a large 70-foot eucalyptus tree fell and broke the cross and crucifix memorial. The cross is new and the original crucifix dedicated on Good Friday 1935 has been repaired with 150 hours of expert care and work.

San Gabriel Mission was founded on Sept. 8, 1771 as the fourth oldest of 21 missions in California.
