SAN GABRIEL - A San Gabriel man has been arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for allegedly growing marijuana with elaborate growth systems at two houses in Hacienda Heights, officials said in a press release Tuesday night.
Zhichi Xu, 42, was taken into custody by authorities after the two Hacienda Heights locations - one in the 3300 block of Glennmark Drive and the other in the 14800 block of Rockhill Drive - were searched early Tuesday morning, officials said.
Xu was arrested for possession of marijuana for sale and booked at Temple Sheriff's Station in Temple City in lieu of $100,000 bail, officials said.
More than 1,400 marijuana plants were discovered between the two locations in various stages of growth using complicated growth systems, officials said, adding the marijuana plants have been valued at approximately $5 million.
In addition, a search of Xu's residence, located in the 1300 block of Elm Avenue in San Gabriel, was conducted, where U.S. currency and other undisclosed pieces of evidence were recovered, officials said.
The early stages of the investigation have also revealed that the electricity used at the grow houses to cultivate the marijuana was stolen from energy supply company Southern California
Edison. A representative from Southern California Edison responded to the location and estimated the value of the stolen electricity to be over $125,000, officials said.
