SAN GABRIEL - The city of San Gabriel will celebrate the grand re-opening of Vincent Lugo Park and La Laguna de San Gabriel on Aug. 28 after completing a $2.7 million remodeling of the historic park.Dedication ceremonies will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Vincent Lugo Park and will include San Gabriel City Council, local legislative representatives and representation by various granting agencies that provided funds for the park reconstruction. The dedication ceremonies are open to the public.
“The ceremony will be followed by a fun-filled, family event complete with food trucks, entertainment, picnic games of croquet and bocce ball, face painting and crafts for kids, a family scavenger hunt and giveaways,” said Rebecca Perez, director of the city’s parks and recreation department.
The event celebrates the culmination of the first phase of construction: a project that was funded through the San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy, state and county grants and bonds and city park development impact fees.
In the past, many users have called the park “Wells Park,” because it is located on Wells Street, just east of Ramona Street.
Key features include: a dry riverbed designed to daylight drainage to the Alhambra Wash, retrofitted electrical system and added energy-efficient pedestrian lighting, multipurpose trails along the wash and throughout the park, added native landscaping, athletic field/open space and an outdoor classroom.
The event will also showcase the preservation efforts completed at La Laguna de San Gabriel, a local landmark that is designated as an historic resource on the California Register. Headed by the Friends of La Laguna preservation team, this first phase restored the entryway dock to playable condition.
Phase one also included work to repair and provide structural support to Lookout Mountain. These initial efforts were funded through the California Cultural and Historical Endowment, Annenberg Foundation, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Pasadena City College Foundation and in-kind donations by the city of San Gabriel.
Future phases of the park renovation include the following key features: renovated park restrooms, new playground equipment with an added water feature, picnic shelters, a renovated park maintenance yard and addition of a gazebo structure for community gatherings.
