Cloud Hangs Over San Gabriel Election

SAN GABRIEL - While several questions still hang over the recent city election, San Gabriel will install a full shift of three council persons, a city treasurer and a city clerk tonight (Tuesday, March 26, 2013) when the city council meets.

Election complaints have raised questions about the actions of two pollworkers who were allegedly telling voters how to vote. Another complaint concerns the residency status of one newly elected council member.

According to news reports, the District Attorney's Office and the city clerk's office have received the reports and investigations are going on.

Newly elected to the council were Jason Pu, Chin Ho Liao and incumbent Kevin Sawkins. Incumbents David Gutierrez and Mario De La Torre were defeated. They are scheduled to be sworn into office tonight.

A complaint has been filed in the clerk's office by a Fred Paine, a San Gabriel resident, who alleges that Chin Ho Liao does not live in the city. He said that Liao's home address of 8541 Loraine Road is not located within the boundaries of San Gabriel City. He alleges that Liao rented an apartment within the city to able to run for the council seat, but actually lives at the Loraine Road address.

At tonight's meeting the council will decide to do about the residency allegations and the question of poll worker actions. Staff is recommending that the council appoint a hearing officer for the election issues.
