San Gabriel To Consider Lunar New Year Event

  • By David Barron

San Gabriel City Council will consider proposed plans for the city's first Lunar New Year Festival when it meets Tuesday, Jan. 7 at city hall.

The proposed plan for a one-day street festival calls for the closing of  Mission Drive from Broadway to Santa Anita Streets on Sunday, February 15. If approved, it will be the first Lunar New Year Celebration for the city. In early years of local Chinese New Year celebrations, the City partnered with Alhambra to sponsor a Chinese New Year parade that traveled down Valley Boulevard from San Gabriel border to Alhambra. The cities of Alhambra and Monterey Park also hold similar Chinese New Year celebrations.

The event would involve an entertainment stage and many food and promotional booths that would be rented out. The event would be produced by Kollaboratioon Creative & Marketing. The same company produces the Monterey Park Night Market and the Korea Town Night Market. The proposal emphasized that the event would be a Asian Lunar New Year Festival and not a Chinese New Year Celebration.

The staff proposal calls for a city expenditure of $18,000 to fund the production of the festival.
