San Gabriel City Council Tuesday selected a new mayor and vice mayor, while moving ahead with a “manual recount” to hopefully break the tie between two council candidates.
The council majority appointed Jason Pu to the ceremonial position as mayor, and Chin Ho Liao as the vice mayor.
At the meeting the council also voted to partially certify the results of the March 3 election and installed re-elected Councilman John Harrington, who received the highest number of votes.
In addition, the Council selected the “lot” method, the process prescribed by state Elections Code, to break the tie between council candidates Denise Menchaca and Juli Costanzo, who received an equal number of votes in the race for the second open council seat.
If the candidates remain tied after the manual recount conducted on Thursday, the Council will use a random selection process similar to the one used by the Los Angeles County Registrar/Recorder to determine the order of names on the ballot.
The Council will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, March 24 to perform the drawing for the council job, if necessary, and then certify the final results of the election. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 425 S Mission Drive.
