"We're on the upswing," said longtime coach Ben Negrete. "We've had pretty good practices the past few weeks. These first two weeks were really starting to show some marked improvement and I'm looking forward to the season and getting started." So, where's the biggest improvement being made? "Overall, I think we've improved on the understanding of what it takes to be a varsity football player," Negrete said. "We have a very young team." And what are the Spartans' biggest challenges? "We have to replace our quarterback and some lineman," Negrete said. "We have some people who are ready to step up and these jobs." So, who's the QB? "Right now, we have a returning three-year player in senior Edgar Jimenez. He brings to the quarterback position mobility and is getting a good grasp of what we'd like to do with our passing attack." Negrete also said the team has a group of running backs led by Eric Magos and Bradley Powell. "They'll be sharing the load at running back," he said. "We should be pretty strong there." And the defense? "Defensively, I'm anticipating being pretty good," he said. "We have a solid group of lineman, both offensively and defensively. We have some pretty good potency if we play to our potential. We should be good up front." And what are the Spartans' goals this season? "Our goals are always the same: Win (Almont League) championship and hopefully get deep into the playoffs," Negrete said.
