MONTEREY PARK - A man was shot and killed by Monterey Park Police Department officers Monday morning around 9:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of Avenida Cesar Chavez - right next to East Los Angeles College - after officers received a call a man was breaking windows at the Carl's Jr. restaurant on the corner of Chavez and Atlantic Boulevard, officials said. According to a statement released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the shooting, officers received a call that a male Latino adult was breaking windows at the Carl's Jr. When the officers arrived, they saw several patrons run out of the location, toward them. At the same time, they saw a male Hispanic adult exit the restaurant armed with a three-foot-long metal bar, according to the statement. The officers ordered the suspect several times to drop the bar, but he did not comply with their orders. An officer ultimately tasered the suspect, but it was ineffective, according to the statement. At that time, the suspect came in close proximity with the officers and swung the bar at them twice. Fearing for their safety, an officer shot the man, according to the statement. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the statement. As of 4:30 p.m. Monday, the suspect had not yet been identified, an official with sheriff's headquarters in Monterey Park said.
