MONTEREY PARK – The Monterey Park City Council unanimously adopted a resolution at its March 3 meeting to build a public safety center that will include anew fire station on the south side of Monterey Park.

The resolution authorizes the city to spend $1.8 million of redevelopment funds to buy the land for the center and then build it when additional funds become available. The city will purchase avacant gas station site at the southeast corner of Potrero Grand Drive and Markland Avenue on the southern border of the city.

The future public safety center will house a modern fire station, police facilities and training rooms. The facility will replace an antiquated fire station currently located on South Garfield Avenue.

In other council news:

The council approved the nomination of Grace Gee to the Monterey Park Arts and Culture Commission and also adopted a resolution to apply for statewide park program grants to “revitalize the Cascades Park and renovate the Jardin De Encanto.”

The council also approved a three-year agreement with J.A. Blash Enterprises to continue putting on the Monterey Park Play Days in May to celebrate the city’s birthday. J.A. Blash Enterprises is an amusement company that provides the rides, game booths and concessions at Barnes Park as part of Monterey Park Play Days.

Cinco de Mayo 2010 will go on as planned as the committee putting it on has requested funding from the council. Funds that were not used for the 2010 Chinese New Year Festival are expected to in turn be used for this festival instead.

The council voted to improve the alley south of Fernfield Drive and west of Gerhart Avenue. This project will involve the removal and replacement of the badly deteriorated asphalt pavement, construction of a new concrete alley gutter, driveway approach and curb ramps that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The council also voted to improve the sidewalk on Potrero Grande Drive along the south side of the street between Markland Drive and Saturn Street. This improvement will include the repair of damaged asphalt pavement and adjacent curb and gutter sections.

In addition, 30 new trees will be planted behind the sidewalk as 19 will have to be removed as the existing irrigation system will need to be repaired.

The council also approved a gift from LA84 Foundation, a non-profit group that utilizes surplus funds from the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games to serve the area’s youth through sports. The gift will improve two 60-foot bullpens, a 70-foot batting cage and enclose the dugouts on the lower baseball field all at La Loma Park.

The next city council meeting is at 4 p.m. on March 17.
