San Gabriel –entrepreneur, businessman, community leader and community icon, Frank Ramirez, passed away on December 18, 2009. A “Celebration of Life” was held on Sunday, January 10th. at the Ambassador Auditorium. From 1956 to 1993, Ramirez owned and operated the regionally popular Panchito’s Restaurant (now the site of Mission 261 Restaurant). The original two-story building was owned by San Gabriel’s first Mayor, A. J. Cuneo and housed City offices and a jail after the City was incorporated in 1913. An award-winning restaurant for more than 35 years, Panchito’s was ‘the place’ for great Mexican food, steaks, frozen Margaritas and strolling Mariachis. Ramirez lived in San Gabriel for 65 of his 89 years – and San Gabriel was his life. He was involved in all aspects of the community, from the colorful Mission Fiesta celebration and parade along Mission Drive; as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, and various community organizations; San Gabriel historian, and a supporter and participant in the first Walk to Los Angeles event in 1981. A recipient of the military’s Purple Heart, Frank Ramirez was a rifleman in the 5th infantry in World War II, and fought under General George S. Patton. He was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge on Christmas Eve in 1944. Known as “Mr. Panchito”, he leaves behind an amazing legacy of faith, love compassion and service. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Margaret, their five children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
