ROSEMEAD - There are two things Adam Sedlack wants you to keep in mind when thinking about the new UFC Gym that has opened just off of Rosemead Boulevard and the Interstate 10 on-ramp. First, it's not a fighting gym.Second, it's not a conventional gym, either. When thinking if the UFC Gym, "the average person thinks of fighting," said Sedlack, senior vice president for the gym. "When the average person gets there, they're typically absolutely excited about the type of facility we have." And what type would that be? "We're taking the best of your parents' fitness club and we're combining it with the best of mixed martial arts training to create UFC Gym," said Sedlack, who added this is the first UFC Gym in Southern California with others expected to come. The first UFC Gym was up north in the Bay Area in Concord. "We give the customer a different look and feel. Every fitness club, they're all the same. There's elevator music playing. There's no energy. It's just a boring fitness club. That is what I call last century fitness. We want to make sure we're creating the new age of fitness and training." Sedlack said the first difference is just in the sound of the gym. "The energy and music are faster and harder because it makes you want to work out harder," he said. "We have everything for everybody." Another difference is that the gym has an energy-packed juice bar - with items under $5 - to get you set for your workout. "When you're working out, what you put in your stomach is very important," Sedlack said. "When you walk in, the first thing you see is the juice bar. They have shakes, sandwiches, eggs, oatmeal. They have all the foods you need to feed your body correctly." There's also a clothing shop when you can buy all your workout accessories, like gloves, shirts and other supplements, Sedlack said. And while you're working out, Sedlack said don't be afraid to bring your kids along as there's plenty for them to do, too, and not just sit and color. "We have a kids studio," he said. "While the kids are working out, the parents can also work out or watch the kids on a closed-circuit monitor. There's also a playroom for the little ones based on fitness. It's always about moving instead of sitting." And there's also martial arts classes for the young ones, he said. "They teach mixed martial arts," Sedlack said. "They teach fitness and the importance of nutrition. Nowadays, when schools are eliminating P.E., where else can you take them to learn about the healthy elements in a safe environment while getting a workout?" There's plenty to look at while working out, Sedlack said, as there are a number of high definition televisions to watch news or sports or whatever when you're on the treadmill or some other high-tech exercise machine. In addition, Sedlack said those who are new to fitness and exercise shouldn't be put off by all UFC has to offer. Also, if you're looking to eat better, the gym can help. "We have technology that will actually create a nutrition program for you," Sedlack said. "We have to look at your caloric input per day versus your caloric expenditure. We then look at that and look at what is your current activity level." But in the end, it really is a different place to which to exercise, Sedlack said. "This is really a lifestyle club," he said. "You have fitness and training combined with programs for kids, a juice bar, locker rooms with full amenities. When people join here, they stay here. At the end of the day the biggest motivator is your results." For more information, log onto ufcgym.com or call (877) 2UFC-GYM.
