In other council news: The council heard a presentation from resident Nick Nevarez about the Rosemead Public Safety Connections forum. This program has arranged for Nevarez to present information about his traffic accident in an effort to make young people, parents and others aware of the destructive impacts of alcohol and drug abuse. The council was also told the program is preparing to host a community-wide meeting on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse on Oct. 21 at the Rosemead High School Auditorium featuring Nevarez as a speaker. On the same topic, the council adopted a “Social Host Underage Drinking and Consumption Accountability” ordinance, which prohibits gatherings of underage persons in places where there is alcohol. The council added the purpose of the ordinance is to send a clear message to parents and others that have a responsibility not to allow underage drinking on their properties. In addition, the ordinance is designed to be a valuable resource and tool to assist the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in the enforcement of underage drinking laws. The council approved funding to improve the look of the city to those just entering it off of Interstate 10 by agreeing to paint the bridges at Rosemead and San Gabriel boulevards and Del Mar Avenue. The color and logo design will be similar to the recently painted Walnut Grove Avenue bridge. The council agreed with the Rosemead Traffic Commission’s recommendation for a new street sign name design and has authorized the replacement of signs in conjunction with street resurfacing projects. The current signs are now not in compliance with federal requirements for signage reflectivity. (Shel Segal can be reached at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
