ROSEMEAD - After a incredible season a year ago, Rosemead High wrestling coach Alex Rai thinks this year's team can go even further.
Last year, the Panthers were Mission Valley League champions and finished third in the CIF championship tournament. And this year?
"This is a better team," Rai said. "They're more balanced. This is the team I've had for an entire year, so they've been dedicated to my philosophy and the process."
Rai has some lofty goals for the Panthers.
"I think we have a very good shot at becoming back-to-back MVL champions," Rai said. "The ultimate is to win a CIF title and the reason is last year. We knew we had good guys, good team, but we had some holes, literally. We didn't have guys in certain weights. We went with no expectations. We lost in the semis to the number one team by two points and that's without two weight classes. But this year we have three returning CIF place winners back."
Rai said he is hoping will lead the team are Devon Ng, a senior in the 106 class, two-time place winner senior Anthony Escarcega in the 160 class and senior Alberto Flores in the 145 class. Flores is a returning CIF champ and state qualifier.
"I'm very happy with our numbers," Rai said. "I'm very happy with the progress of the guys. It's a good time to be a part of Rosemead wrestling."
