BoscoHoopsXROSEMEAD - In his third year at the helm of the Don Bosco Technical Institute boys' basketball team, coach Dominic Sermeno is hoping the Tigers can improve on the record of last year when they finished third in Camino Real League with a 20-9 record and reached the CIF quarterfinals.
But first, the team has got to get through a very tough league schedule.
"It's a tough league, very competitive," Sermeno said. "My first year we finished 0-10, last year 5-5, so it's very competitive."
And how does he expect to achieve this?
"We take it one game at a time," Sermeno said. "Our goal is to play to the best of our ability each and every game we play. I believe wins and losses take care of themselves."
The team did a lot of practice and competing over the spring and summer and Sermeno is hoping that will have paid for itself.
"We already have a good feel for each other because of all the work we did in spring and summer, so I'm really excited for the possibilities this season," he said.
Expected to lead the team is senior point guard Matthew Santos, Sermeno said. Santos is a two-time first team all league player and a defending first team CIF player from a year ago, in addition to being a second team all area player.
"(Santos) brings experience, maturity," Sermeno said. "He sees the court well and he's a dead-eye shooter. He's really quick, really smart and best of all, he's a team player. All the kids respect him because of his work ethic. He's just a natural leader."
Another top player for the Tigers is senior forward Elijah Yanit, who along with Santos is a three-year varsity player.
"He brings experience and an outstanding work ethic," Sermeno said of Yanit. "He's one of the most coachable players I've ever coached. You ask him to do something and he does it."
And an up-and-coming player for Bosco Tech is expected to be sophomore point guard Max Mora.
"He's one of those kids who's a tough, hard-nosed player," Sermeno said of Mora. "He dives for balls, takes charges, will defend anyone. One of his best assets is he sees the ball very well."
And what's the goal for the year?
"We want to clinch a berth in the playoffs and hopefully make some noise," Sermeno said.

YES YOUR TEAM DID DO ALOT OF PRACTICE OVER THE SUMMER. YOU SCHEDULED GAMES THAT IF MY SON EJ MEJIA DIDNT PLAY YOU WERE GOING TO CANCEAL BECAUSE YOUR TEAM WOULDNT BE ABLE TO WIN WITHOUT EJ SO THERE WOULDNT BE KNOW POINT. BUT, YOU PLEADED WITH US AND HIM AND HE STAYED. YOU KNEW HE WASNT HAPPY AT A ALL BOYS SCHOOL AND WANTED TO TRANSFER IN JUNE. HE STAYED AND PLAYED ALL SUMMER BECAUSE HE DIDNT WANT YOU TO CANCEAL THE GAMES. YOU HAVE TAKEN MY SONS HAPPINESS FROM HIM BECAUSE YOU CANT GET OVER THE FACT THAT HE WASNT HAPPY AT A ALL BOYS SCHOOL AND TRANSFERED TO A COED SCHOOL. MADE IT A POINT TO LET CIF KNOW AND CAME UP WITH SOME LAME REASON WHY CIF SHOULD FIND HIM INELIGABLE TO PLAY AT HIS NEW SCHOOL. YOUR WRONG AND YOU KNOW IT, BE A REAL MAN AND KEEP YOUR WORD ABOUT MY SON'S HAPPINESS IS WHAT MATTERS. WELL THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP AND TAKING IT AWAY.
