ROSEMEAD - A woman of Cambodian descent was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy at the Pacific Clinics on Valley Boulevard after she advanced toward deputies while wielding a hammer over her head, officials said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released, officials said.
Officials said in a statement that deputies fired a taser at the suspect, but that it had no effect on her. They added the deputies attempted to communicate with the victim, but she did not comply with any of their commands.
The victim then advanced toward the deputies with the hammer over her head and screaming when one of the deputies fired two rounds from his gun, killing her.
The woman is believed to have been mentally ill, officials said.
Officials said whenever an officer-involved shooting occurs involving deputies and it results in a fatality, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.
These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles District Attorney and the Los Angeles County Coroner, as well as investigations by Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau, officials said.
Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene and have full access to the facts known to the sheriff's department throughout every phase of these investigations, officials said.
Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee, officials said.
