Rosemead, August 5, 2010 --The Garvey School District Board of Education today announced the appointment of its new superintendent. The board appointed Dr. Sandra D. Johnson, who will begin her service in mid- August. Dr. Johnson succeeds former superintendent Ginny Peterson who retire earlier this summer. Most recently, Dr. Johnson was the Superintendent in the Glendale Elementary School District in Glendale, Arizona. Prior to that, she was the Chief Instructional Officer for the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools in Nashville, Tennessee. "Dr. Johnson has a demonstrated record of raising test scores and closing the achievement gap, promoting partnerships with parent and community groups, developing and managing budgets and working successfully with staff," the school district stated in a press release. Janet Chin, Garvey Board President, said "We as a Board are very excited about the opportunity to move the district forward under Dr. Johnson's leadership." The Garvey District has 11 kindergarten through 8th grade campuses in the Rosemead and Monterey Park communities. A reception will be planned after school begins to introduce Dr. Johnson to the school district staff and community.
