ROSEMEAD - The city of Rosemead will be hosting a 5K, 10K and one mile walk/run on Sept. 11 to raise funds for the memorial the city is planning on building to honor those who gave their lives in the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Known as the "Sept. 11 Run for the Memorial," it will start that morning as the city hopes to raise some of the estimated $60,000 it will cost to build and erect the memorial, said David Montgomery Scott, director of parks and recreation.

"All the races will gather at the UFC Gym, which is at the corner of Rosemead Boulevard and Glendon Way by Interstate 10," he said. "The 5K and 10K runs start at 8 a.m. and the one mile walk/run begins at 8:15 a.m."

And where do the races go?

"All races end at Rosemead City Hall, where we will begin a Sept. 11 commemorative ceremony following the awards from the race," Scott said. "The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m."

Scott said there are many ways for you to sign up for the race.

"You can pre-register at any city facility or UFC Gym, or you can get a registration form on the city's website," he said.

In addition, you can register at www.active.com.

The city's website is www.cityofrosemead.org. You can also call the parks and recreation department direct at (626) 569-2160 if you have any other questions, Scott said.

In addition, donations are welcome and are tax-deductible, Scott said.

The early registration deadline is Sept. 2. The early registration cost for the 5K or the walk/run is $15 and $25 for the 10K. After that, the prices go up $10, respectively, Scott said, noting that the registration fee for the runs are not tax-deductible.

The memorial will consist of a steel beam the city got from ground zero through the New York/New Jersey Port Authority. It was transported from New York to California over a seven-day period, costing $2,000 and arrived in Rosemead on Aug. 16, Scott said.

In addition, the city is soliciting donations to build the memorial, which will be a sculpture that includes the steel beam. The $60,000 price tag is to fund the sculptor, do site preparation and installation of the memorial.

"The city council has determined that the memorial is to be funded through donations and private fundraising," Scott said.
