The Aztecs took care of business early, cruising to a 63-19 victory in front of a stunned Matador crowd in a CIF Southern Section Almont League game. With the Aztecs' fabulous start in the first quarter, behind the strong inside, outside play of twin brothers Justin and Jordan Long, it made it difficult for the short-handed Matadors to keep up on this night. The Aztecs continued to press defensively and displayed their crisp offensive execution in the second quarter taking a 33-10 lead going into the half. The second half played out the same with the Aztecs taking a 53-15 lead in the third quarter before closing it out. "Fundamentals and experience are critical components especially with this young team," said San Gabriel coach Jason Meador." Patience is also key with all of the injuries we‘ve been faced with this year." As for the opposition, Keppel coach Hung Duong had this to say: "Tonight we came in a little more focused. It‘s always dangerous coming in here, no matter what team they have." When asked how much easier having twin brothers that could execute inside and out, offensively, Duong said: "It's very nice to have that combination, when you have a big kid that can score inside and a kid that can shoot the three, that's pretty nice to have." High scorers in the game for the Aztecs were none other than the one, two twin brother tandem of Jordan and Justin Long, tallying 19 and 18 points, respectively. As for the Matadors they were led by Eric Alvarez's six points. The Matadors dropped to 2-14 overall and 0-5 in league. As for the Aztecs. they improved to 15-6 overall and to 4-1 in league. Next up for the Matadors is Schurr High, which they will face this Friday at Schurr. |
