Season Gets Off To Wild Start At Irwindale

  • By Shel Segal
041411IrwindaleXIRWINDALE - 4/2/11 - Racing at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale got its 2011 season off to an exciting start Saturday night as a multicar wreck on lap 16 - one lap after a restart - which knocked out six cars.
Luckily for Brandon Davis of Henderson, Nev., he was not one of those cars. Driving the number 55 and starting the race in the fifth position, Davis took advantage of the fact that three of the top four starting cars were lost in that crash.
This allowed Davis to run away with the win by several car lengths. He had his top speed post out at 94.473 mph.
Davis said while he knew he got a bit lucky, he'll take it.
"We really got fortunate," Davis said. "Winning a championship is about being fortunate. It feels great to come out with a win and hopefully we can do it again."
The pride of Rancho Cucamonga, Ryan Partridge, took first place in the King Taco Super Trucks race at opening night of the 2011 season at Toyota Speedway of Irwindale.
Partridge won the pole and took advantage of a restart halfway through the race to take the lead for good. He had a top speed of 89.924 mph at the half-mile oval track.
"It wasn't that easy this time," said Partridge, who ended last year with 10 straight wins. "These guys are getting better. I didn't think we were going to make it."
Partridge added the restart really helped him as he was in second place before the caution flag was waved.
"He took the outside," he said. "I took the inside. That turned into our advantage because I had to just hold onto it for the rest of the race."
