Auto Racers & Fans From The Southwest Headed to Major Local Races on April 30

  • By Chuck Lyons

Irwindale - - Automobile racers and fans will be heading to Irwindale Speedway from all over the southwest for a double-header of top pro touring series championship events along with a local third-mile favorite on Saturday night, April 30, 2016 to see the Lucas Oil Modifieds (LOM) cars racing on the banked Irwindale half-mile race track as they hit stop number three in the 10-race championship season tour that will see them traveling up and down the Pacific Coast to win this year's crown, announced an Irwindale Speedway spokesperson.

Lakeside, California's Matt Hicks has the points lead at 140 in these one-of-a-kind racing machines that run some of fastest laps seen at Irwindale. Hicks is followed by Larry Gerchman from Lake Havasu City, Arizona with 132 points and Linny White from nearby Colton, Calif. with 131 points.   There are 33 teams on the LOM Championship trail this year and, with only 20 points separating first and fifth place in points, all of them are expected to be at Irwindale to compete on Saturday night's SuperClean Spring Shootout Presented by Bilstein Shocks. A complete rundown on the series, points, and people is on www.lucasoilmodifieds.com.
With races in Arizona, Nevada, and California, interest runs in the series high across all of the southwest when these lean/mean, pared-down racing machines come to town, and particularily when they run wheel to wheel on the "3-wide" blended banking at Irwindale Speedway, according to the speedway spokesperson.
The Spears SRL Southwest Tour (www.srlsouthwesttour.com) is another group that takes "racing around the West Coast" quite seriously, the spokesperson continued.    This year the 9-race championship series will see the racers in Arizona, Nevada and in California where they have two races scheduled at Irwindale, April 30, and a repeat visit on Saturday, June 18. After their first race of the points season, veteran racer Derek Thorne has the lead, followed closely by Parker Stephens, and series rookie/Irwindale regular Christian McGhee.
Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse of Colton and San Dimas will continue its support of the teams of the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series in 2016. With the continued association with the series, Pinnacle Peak Steakhouse will be the presenting sponsor of two marquee SPEARS Southwest Tour Series events in 2016, the upcoming April 30 race at Irwindale Speedway and the $10,000 to Win 2016 Championship finale at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Nov. 19, announced the Irwindale spokesperson.
Parker Steele (#5) from Peoria, Arizona leads the Irwindale Legend Cars 2016 championship points standings with 50 points by virtue of winning the first of the 8-race series events on April 2. Darren Amidon (#33) of Lakeside is in second place with 48 points, with Chad Schug of Oak Hills only 4 points back in third place at 46 points.
Irwindale's stock car points system is simple and works well to reward consistently good driving, continued the speedway spokesperson. . It awards 50 points for first place, 48 for second, 46 for third and so on. . Points totals run close all year long and, over the years, many Irwindale season championships have been won by a very small difference in points.
On April 30, gates open at 4 p.m. and the family-favorite "On-Track Autograph Session" opens up on the track at 5:45 p.m. Every driver, every car and throngs of passionate auto race fans make the up close and personal session a not-to-be-missed part of the excitement of short track racing, said the speedway spokesperson, who encouraged fans to bring a camera to the session.
Discounted adult tickets are available on the Irwindale Event Center website www.irwindaleeventcenter.com until midnight Friday, April 29.
