The Rosemead High wrestling team finished 10th at the West Coast Classic Wrestling Tournament at Rosemead High Dec. 19 and 20, while Schurr High finished 11th. The tournament was won by Mount Carmel High.
Schurr coach Jay Valencia said he felt his team could have done better.
“I think we were underrepresented a bit,” Valencia said. “I had a couple of guys I expected to do better than they did, but at the same time I have a pretty young team. There’s a lot of time for improvement and this will build us up for next year for what’s to come.”
Rosemead coach Alexander Rai was very pleased with his squad’s performance.
Rosemead’s Matt Fregoso, who is one of the top wrestlers in the San Gabriel Valley, was the champion of the 130 class. He won all seven of his matches.
In addition, Rai said the tournament has been running for 23 years. The tournament is named after the late coach Louie Madrigal, who coached Rosemead for 30 years and 4 CIF championships. He passed away 2 years ago and the tournament was renamed the Louie Madrigal West Coast Classic last year in his honor.
