ALHAMBRA – Starter Daniel De La Pena gave up four runs in the sixth inning – three of them coming on a tie-breaking home run blast by catcher Nikolai Velis – and the Mark Keppel baseball team lost to visiting San Gabriel 4-1 on Monday in an Almont League game.
Velis knocked in first baseman Cesar Guzman, who had walked, and designated hitter Tony Huerta, who singled with one out in the inning for San Gabriel (8-8, 5-6 AL).

ALHAMBRA – The Keppel baseball team saw its playoff hopes derailed just a bit as it got walloped 14-0 in five innings on Friday by visiting Montebello in an Almont League game. The magic number for Keppel (10-12, 5-5 AL) remains four for the fourth and final playoff spot from the league with five games to play – three against San Gabriel and two against Schurr.

  Cantwell Sacred Heart played in its first ever California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division 5 varsity boys baseball championship game and lost 11-0 to Woodcrest Christian on June 4, at University of California Riverside.

Cantwell Sacred Heart High School won its California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section Div. 5 playoff game 4-1 against Citrus Hill and will play Woodcrest Christian at 7 p.m., on June 4, 2016 at University of California Riverside. It's Cantwell's first ever CIF Southern Section Division 5 Championship game.

  Montebello, which was trying to advance to the title game for the first time in more than 50 years, lost in the semi-finals 11-1 to Kaiser, who will play Laguna Beach for the title on June. 4.

  More about both schools will be on this web site this weekend as people have come out to give a big show of support the schools haven't seen in a few years, according to one local baseball fan.

      Cantwell Sacred Heart High School and Montebello High School boys varsity baseball teams will play in California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section playoff semifinal games on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, with both schools hosting a home game starting at 3:15 p.m.  A win by Cantwell Sacred Heart would give the school its first finals appearance in school history, while Montebello hasn't played in the finals in a few decades.

   Montebello High School is leading the boys varsity baseball Almont League standings at 6-0, while Rosemead won a extra inning game at home 11-10 on April 15, 2016, against Arroyo when Rosemead batter Mike Reyes walked with the bases loaded to force in senior teammate Nick Aguilar with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Rosemead the come from behind win and improve its Mission Valley League record to 7-4, currently tieing with Mountain View and South El Monte for first place.

  El Monte High School boys varsity baseball team took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning before Rosemead rallied with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 5-2 in a Mission Valley League contest on March 2, 2016 at Rosemead High School. Rosemead opened its season with a 7-5 league loss at Gabrielino High School on Feb.  27.

class="gkFeaturedItemTitle" MPk's Andy Nieto Resigns at Amat

Monterey Park native Andy Nieto has stepped down as coach of the highly successful baseball program at Bishop Amat High School. 

Nieto, who grew up in Monterey Park and played at Schurr High School, announced his resignation shortly after his team earned its fourth championship at the school.  Although this season started with four losses, the Amat Lancers ended with a 4-3 record over Palm Desert for the CIF-SS division 3 title. The game was played at Dodger Stadium.

Nieto did not announce any plans for his future position. There are several coaching positions available at St. John Bosco, Servite and other Catholic Schools.

Nieto began coaching at Bishop Amat High in 2007 and had numberous championships. He finishes with a career record of 196 -55-1 at Bishop Amat. 

Before coming to Amat, Nieto was an assistant coach for nine years at USC and was part of their national Championship teams and went on to the NCAA College World Series in Omaha three times with the Trojans. He also played in minor league professional baseball.

Nieto is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Nieto, Sr. Monterey Park residents. Andy senior has been recognized throughout the region for his involvement in youth baseball. He was the founder of the Monterey Park Angels, a successful traveling team program.
