Schurr Off To Poor League Start

MONTEBELLO - 3/18/11 - The Schurr High baseball team is off to a poor Almont League start, dropping its first two games, the second one a 7-1 killing by visiting Mark Keppel High on Friday.

Junior right hander starter Jacob Ramirez (0-1) took the loss for Schurr (2-5 overall, 0-2 in league). Ramirez pitched four innings, allowing three runs, three walks and striking out one.

The Spartans scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth when third baseman Matthew Mayo led off with a triple and was knocked in by the next batter, senior catcher Daniel Perez, who singled.

Schurr lost its league opener Wednesday at Bell Gardens, 5-2. However, coach Ken Marrero is not worried about his team's performance.

"We were batting .397 as a team before the game Friday, but the kid from Keppel threw strikes and just shut us down," he said. "I'm still confident. It's early in the season. They work hard and if you work hard then good things will happen to you."
