Spartans Turning It Around

MONTEBELLO - 4/26/11 - The season has turned around for the Schurr High baseball team as it is on a modest two-game winning streak.
In addition, its pitching staff has pitched 13 consecutive scoreless innings, said coach Ken Marrero.
Leading the Spartans (5-8 overall, 3-6 in Almont League) has been Matthew Mayo. Mayo has been doing it on the mound and with the bat, Marrero said.
On the mound, Mayo is 3-1 with a 1.62 ERA, while hitting his average is .421 in just 38 at-bats with a league-leading nine doubles, two triples, one home run and 10 RBIs while playing third base and batting in the third spot.
"He's doing everything for us," Marrero said. "He's in a groove right now. He's been with us since he was a freshman. He's very good with the bat."
And how has the season looked to the coach?
"It's a little disappointing in league," he said. "We lost some close games with our defense falling apart a little. But we're playing better now. As long as we're playing hard in practice I'm happy. We're having fun. It's a good group. It's an improved team."
And good news for Marrero: Seven starters - including the entire pitching staff - will be back next season.
